Join the conversation. A couple of years ago, Stephan Jenkins, frontman of Third Eye Blind, announced that the group would no longer make full-length albums. In fact, there was still a little work to be completed in the studio before Third Eye Blind headed out on the tour. On a musical level, the album figures to be more raw than other Third Eye Blind efforts — no small statement for a band that has often rocked hard, even though its songs also have boasted considerable melody. Jenkins began his journey into creating meaningful rock and roll in San Francisco in , when he teamed up with songwriting collaborator and guitarist Kevin Cadogan.

The songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan signed the band's first major-label recording contract with Elektra Records in , which was later reported as the largest publishing deal ever for an unsigned artist. The band released their self-titled debut album in , with the band largely consisting of Jenkins lead vocals, rhythm guitar , Cadogan lead guitar , Arion Salazar bass guitar , and Brad Hargreaves drums. Shortly after the release of the band's second album in , Blue, with the same line-up, Cadogan was released from the band under controversial circumstances. The band continued, but with many line-up changes and gaps between album releases. The band released Out of the Vein in and Ursa Major in , with only Jenkins and Hargreaves as the remaining core members. The band's current iteration, including Kryz Reid lead guitar , Alex Kopp keyboards , and Alex LeCavalier bass guitar , recorded the band's fifth studio album, Dopamine, which was released in After Kopp's departure in , a sixth studio album, Screamer, was released on October 18,
Writing music can be seen as a systematic, routine process: Artists take popular styles of the time, add personal flair and go on to incessantly promote their product of the music-making machine. But how do bands maintain a following — fans of their new music — 20 years after their biggest hits? Yet using new techniques does not mean using exclusively 21st-century techniques. Amid maintaining the lyrical complexity of earlier rock music, songs on this album display the direct cyclicity of music. These three bands, all popular throughout the s, were heavily influenced by pop rock predecessors of the prior two decades — that is, influenced by the very bands they now influence. By revealing the implicit influence bands have on each other, Jimmy Eat World demonstrates how songwriting is not a solitary process. It is a process of collaboration and experimentation.
